Farm Science Review

Each September in London, Ohio, The Ohio State University holds the annual Farm Science Review. The review shows farmers and others interested in agriculture what new product developments have appeared in the past year. Farm and construction equipment, innovations and demonstrations generally attract the most interest to those attending; from the 1-1/2 horsepower small engines used in the industry to the 400 horsepower tractors. All members of the FFA chapter have an opportunity to take a one-day field trip to the review. This is an excellent educational activity for all members, providing them the opportunity to see the many facets of agriculture. The A-C FFA is attending on Tuesday, September 21st.
FFA Summer Hours

Every FFA member was required to participate in at least eight hours of scheduled summer activities with the FFA during the summer. There are a few different ways you can do this. The easiest way was to go to FFA camp. A few other ways that you could have mixed and matched to earn your hours was: Adopt-A-Highway, Industry Tour, the Ohio Cattleman Association's State Fair Food Booth, Canoe Trip, Washington Leadership Conference, clean-up and repair the Cross Mound Park, Summer Ag Breakfasts, Hosting the Ohio FFA Center, Tarlton Fire Dept. Fish Fry, or simply just helping organize and clean the Ag Department facilities on two scheduled work days. We had good participation in this years summer activities.
Canoe Trip

The annual FFA canoe trip was held on August 7th. We took a school bus to the Hocking River, where members spent the day canoeing and having fun. If you liked to go canoeing or just wanted to have a lot of fun this would have been the trip for you . Attendees were: Stacey Sams, Dustin Baxter, Adam Baldwin, TJ Hines, Jessica Caisse , Josh Ayers, Matt Nester, and Ashley Lamb.
Adopt-A-Highway

The August Adopt-a-Highway was held on August 5th @ 11:00 a.m. This was great opportunity to get a large amount of your summer hours all in one day. You could have attended the Ag Breakfast that morning and immediately following that you could have come back to Amanda and help clean up our three mile stretch of State Route 159. Members in attendance were : Dustin Baxter, TJ Hines, Jamie Luck, Samantha Reid, Matt Nester, and April Senften.
Washington Leadership Conference

This was for those members who earned the Memorial award at the spring awards banquet. The Washington Leadership Conference is a 5-day conference where FFA chapter leaders from around the country have the opportunity to our nation's capitol while learning valuable skills and experiencing personal growth. Those attending are chosen through an application and interview process within the chapter. The Amanda-Clearcreek FFA awards all-expense paid scholarhips at the chapter banquet to the two members who have completed the interview process and have proved they possess the characteristics of future chapter leaders When the FFA members eventually depart from the Washington Leadership Conference, they know they are taking home great memories. The skills and experiences that are earned can be brought back to the home chapter to inspire and teach all FFA members how to become better leaders. The WLC is something any member with desire to achieve should strive to attend.

Members who attended this year with Mr. Sharp the week of the July 6th-11th went Cortney Collins & Adam Baldwin.

What are Career Development Events?

Agricultural Education's Career Development Events (CDE) are educational activities that are organized and conducted by the Ohio Department of Education, Division of Vocational and Adult Education, Agricultural Education Service. They are designed to assess student competence in business and industry verified occupational skills. CDEs are a motivating force that stimulate occupational interests and personal development in high school students enrolled in agricultural education programs.

At present, this CDE includes a multiple-choice general knowledge test, tree species identification, tool identification and various practicums such as timber cruising, map reading, etc. It progressed to a four member contest during the 1995-1996 school year and starting with 2000,when a chapter may enter up to eight team members, with the top three scores making-up the team score, at the state level. The team is currently preparing for the state contest to be held on October 2nd.
Rural Soils

The Rural Soils CDE tests student knowledge and understanding of soils for agricultural usage. At present, the contest consists of a test and the judging of four soil pits. The district contest is held in a different county each year and a chapter may enter up to five team members, with the top three scores making-up the team score. A team must place in the top five in the district to proceed to the state contest, where four members comprise the team.
Urban Soils

At present, the contest consists of a test and the judging of four soil pits. Ag Breakfast

During the school year, the Amanda-Clearcreek FFA meets once monthly for the chapter's "Ag Breakfast". The members vote on a location each meeting for the following month. Members meet at the decided upon location at 7:00 am on the first Thursday of the month for breakfast and social interaction. Ag breakfasts are excellent opportunities for members to get to know each other better and get a nourishing meal for which to start the day. The First Ag Breakfast was held at Frisches on September 2nd. We had 49 members attend one of the larger groups we have had.
