April Meeting


The meeting for the month of April will be Monday, April 18th at 7:00 P.M. The Ag Challenge will be the scavenger hunt. If you have already participated in an Ag Challenge you may still participate in the scavenger hunt.


Ag Breakfast


This months Ag Breakfast will be held at Bob Evans at 6:45 A.M. on Thursday, April 7th. All members are encouraged to come and enjoy a meal with their fellow FFA members.


Proficiency Awards


This year our chapter had several members that applied for proficiency awards at the district level. The chapter has seven members who placed in the district. Accounting- June Spires placing 1st. Ag Mechanics and Maintenance- Nic White placing 2nd. Agricultural Processing- Trent Strous- placing 1st. Grain Production- Brad Bowers placing 4th, and Christian Hoffman with placing to yet be determined. Small Animal Production and Care- Entrepreneurship- Lindsey Carpenter placing 1st. Turf Grass Management- Placement- Crish Alvey placing 1st. Lindsey Carpenter and Christian Hoffman also placed as finalists at the state level in their award area. They will get their placings at the State FFA Convention in May. A big congratulations to everyone!


State FFA Degrees


This year our chapter has three members who will receive their State FFA Degrees: Brad Bowers, Christian Hoffman, and Lindsey Carpenter. They will receive their degrees at the State FFA Convention in May. Congratulations!


American FFA Degree


This year Jace Spires applied and completed all of the requirements for the American FFA Degree. He has been approved at the State level. We will know if he has qualified for the Degree during the summer. Good job Jace!


Assistant Officers


At the March FFA meeting, the new assistant officers for 2005-2006 were installed. They are as follows:

Agricultural Mechanics Skills


This year our chapter’s Ag Mechanics team ( Brad Bowers, Wayne Strickler, and Jake Westhoven ) placed 2nd at the district level at Teays Valley High School on March 15th. They will be advancing to the State Ag Mechanics contest on Friday, April 8th. Good luck guys!!


Mulch Sale


The chapter mulch sale started on Monday, March 14th. This year the chapter is selling cypress, hardwood, pine bark nugget, and color enhanced red types of mulch. Each bag is 3 cubic feet. Orders are due by April 13th. We are strongly encouraging all members to sell mulch, even if it means selling only a few bags, or maybe even a couple to a teacher, that way you will not have to deliver it. Each member should sell some mulch. We also encourage all members to turn all money in as soon as they receive it.


State Skills CDEs


The State Skills CDEs are on Saturday, April 2nd. The General Livestock, Poultry, Equine Management, Dairy Cattle, Agronomy, and Wildlife Management teams will all be participating. Good luck to all teams!


Chapter Awards Banquet


This years chapter awards banquet will be Saturday, May 21st. All members are required to attend. More details will be in the May newsletter. We hope to see all of you there!


Zane Trace Leadership Night


On Tuesday, March 21st our chapter attended the State Officer Leadership Night at Zane Trace High School. State officers conducted two workshops on conflict solutions. Our chapter had 26 members in attendance. Members were: Jessica Mason, Dani Sowers, Adam Baldwin, Ben Ball, Stacey Sams, Bobbi Edwards, Jessica Caisse, Jamie Luck, Alisha Kougher, Jordan Collins, Chelsea Rutter, Samantha Reid, T.J. Miller, Greg Bowers, Lacey Price, Brittany Miller, Dustin Baxter, Christine Bussert, Tiffany Brown, Megan Underhill, Josh Ayers, Crish Alvey, Ashley Lamb, Matt Nestor, Michelle Ball, and Debbie Picklesimer.


Marysville Invitational Contest


On Saturday, March 5th our chapter took members from the spring skills contests (Agronomy, Meats, Wildlife Management, Dairy Cattle, General Livestock, Poultry, and Equine Management.) to participate in the Marysville Invitational Contest. This was a practice contest to allow the team members to practice for the State Contest.


Mt. Gilead Invitational Contest


On Saturday, March 12th our chapter took all of it’s spring skills contest participants to the Mt. Gilead Invitational Contest. This was also a practice contest to prepare members for State Contest.


May Contests (Career Development Events)


*Animal Health- The animal health CDE is designed to assess the skills and knowledge that students must possess to work in an animal health occupation, such as in a veterinar-ian’s office or in an animal research facility. Each contestant will have two hours to com-plete the total event, consisting of a written test, and identification test, and a skills practicum.


*Aquarium Management- The aquarium management CDE is to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate aquarium knowledge and skills. The team is made up of four members. Each contestant will have two hours to complete the total event, consisting of a written test, an identification test, and a skills practicum.


*Cooperative Education- The cooperative education CDE is an educational activity designed to stimulate students to learn ways of doing business in America with emphasis on agricultural cooperatives. A written test consisting of 65 multiple choice and true/false statements plus 10 problem solving questions relating to agricultural cooperatives will be administered to each contestant.


*Meats- The meats CDE is an educational activity designed as a practical method to teach students to identify cuts of meat, to develop entry level employment knowledge, and to recognize quality meat products. The skills students learn in identifying and judg-ing meat products should make them better livestock producers and consumers by giving the students practical experience in identifying, recognizing and understanding characteristics that affect meat quality. This years team consists of Josh Ayers, Bobbi Edwards, and Ashley Lamb.


*Farm Business Management- This contest is made to provide students with the opportunity to make a practical application of the knowledge and skills learned in the production agriculture curriculum in solving typical farm management problems. This CDE should stimulate interest in the farm management instructional program and as a result help students to become more effective farm managers.


*Greenhand Quiz- This contest is made to increase the basic knowledge of students about their organization and its’ operations, to keep FFA members current with the happenings in their organization, to provide students with another incentive to participate in a competency-based activity, and to provide instructors with another educational awards program to offer their student. The greenhand quiz consists of a 75 question test and is only open to freshmen. All freshmen are encouraged to participate!

*Agricultural Engineering- The purpose of this CDE is to assess students' knowledge in agricultural engineering technology.
Any one who is interested in participating in any of the state contests for the month of May see Mr. Tilley and sign up A.S.A.P. Sign-up ends on Friday, April 8th. All May contests will be held at the State Convention on May 5th, and 6th.


State FFA Convention


The State FFA Convention will be held on May 5th, 6th, and 7th. Mr. Sharp and Mr. Tilley will be handing out permission forms the week of April 4th-8th. State FFA Con-vention is a great way to meet new FFA members and make new friends. You must be participating in a State Contest to be able to go to the State Convention.


School Service Project


Our chapter has recently received over 100 Dwarf Alberta Spruce trees. We will be planting them around the baseball/softball fields as a school service project. We will plant them on Wed, April 6th at 3:15 P.M. If it is a rainy day, the rain date will be Friday, April 8th at 3:15 P.M. All members are encouraged to help. We will need all of the help we can get.
